When Pets Are Refused Entry to the UK
Many people are surprised to learn that pets can be refused entry to the UK.
While it doesn’t happen every day, we regularly see situations at border control where pets are delayed or refused due to incorrect documentation.
Here are some real examples of what can go wrong.
🚫 No Animal Health Certificate (AHC)
One of the most common issues is pets arriving with only a pet passport.
Since Brexit, if you are using or paying ANY transporter, this is classed as commercial transport, and an Animal Health Certificate is legally required.
Without it, pets may not be allowed to enter the UK.
🚫 Rabies Vaccination Timing Incorrect
We have seen cases where:
The rabies vaccine was given before the microchip
The 21-day waiting period was not completed
In these situations, pets are not considered legally compliant for entry.
🚫 Missing Customs Declarations
Post-Brexit rules require pets to be declared correctly.
If this step is missed, border authorities can delay or refuse entry until everything is corrected.
🚫 Incorrect or Missing Notifications (IPAFFS / TRACES)
These systems notify UK and EU authorities about incoming pets.
If they are not completed correctly, it can result in delays, inspections, or refusal.
⚠️ What Happens at the Border
At UK entry points such as Calais (Le Shuttle):
Documents are checked carefully
Microchips may be scanned
Welfare checks are carried out
If something is wrong, the situation must be resolved before entry is allowed.
✅ How to Avoid These Problems
The safest option is to choose a transporter who:
Understands UK legal requirements
Handles all documentation correctly
Ensures full compliance before travel
At Pet Transport Bulgaria, we manage the entire process — so your pet travels safely and legally.
